Summary
This position performs preventative maintenance, repair and road preparation of Capital Regional District vehicles and equipment. The position works with internal customers to support fleet related matters as well as assists with supporting awareness with regulatory compliance.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Carries out commercial vehicle safety inspections according to the Motor Vehicle Act, regulations and CRD policies.
- Provides documentation, records and reporting on work completed to support inspection as well as regulatory compliance.
- Performs repairs for construction and other related equipment and vehicles both in the field and in the Fleet maintenance shop.
- Conducts tests to determine cause of equipment malfunction and advises supervisor action required.
- Performs emergency repairs standby fire pumps and back up A.C. power generators as required.
- Performs road preparation of new vehicles and equipment for service.
- Installs equipment, two way radios, emergency lighting, cellular telephones and D.C. Power conversion equipment.
- Welds and fabricates a variety of metals, as required.
- Issues and accounts for parts, supplies and materials used from inventory.
- Prioritizes, repairs and coordinates with the internal customers.
- Assesses situations, resolves problems as well as makes recommendations, as required.
- Provides input related to asset condition, asset modification, and procurement projects.
- Provides guidance and direction to CRD staff related to fleet issues and fleet recommendations.
- Provides routine orientations and information to internal customers, as required.
- Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensures site buildings are secure and alarmed at end of shift.
- May be required to work varied shifts and travel within the CRD's area of responsibility.
- Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Key Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- Training in hydraulics, computerized brake systems (ABS) and in all types of welding and metal fabrication.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the methods, techniques and the use of materials, tools and requirements to perform the work.
- Knowledge of maintenance management systems to produce work orders and purchase orders.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform a variety of skilled manual tasks requiring the use of effective independent judgement.
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
- Sufficient strength and ability to carry out required work.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years' directly related experience
- Red Seal (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Automotive Service Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic)
Certifications
- Commercial Vehicle Inspectors' Licence
- Lift Truck Operator Certification
- Certified BC Crane Operator - full scope, stiff boom 20 tonnes and under
- Certified BC Crane Mechanic
- Automotive Air Conditioning System Technician certificate
- Valid BC Driver's Licence
- Air Brake Endorsement
