Summary
This position performs a wide variety of semiskilled maintenance and custodial duties including the use of specialized equipment in various parts of the complex. The work involves the operation, cleaning and maintenance of public recreational facilities which may include ice arenas, swimming pools, and other facilities.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs building and equipment maintenance related to painting, plumbing, replacing arena glass, repairing hardware, carpentry, heating systems, ice scraping equipment and tasks in specialized areas and functions.
- Maintains contact with teams, organizations and the general public and advises on the usage of recreational facilities as per the booking schedule.
- Performs building cleaning functions such as sweeping, mopping and scrubbing floors, cleaning and disinfecting washrooms and change rooms, cleaning public areas and replenishing supplies.
- Makes routine security checks and maintain order of customer behaviour in public areas.
- Monitors and records the operation of the arena refrigeration plant, checks oil levels and pressures, refrigerant temperature and pressure, cooling water and brine temperature, and be fully conversant with emergency procedures.
- Maintains ice surface in the arena.
- Tests pool water samples and adjust chemical feed rates to ensure chlorine and Ph. levels conform to Health Department requirements.
- Cleans and makes minor repairs to hair and lint strainers on pump units and chemical feed systems.
- Monitors the operation of a variety of pumps and filters, logging results and making adjustments.
- Vacuums and brushes pool walls, gutters and surfaces, backwashes pool filters and disinfects pool decks.
- Works in skate shop as required.
- Performs parks’ maintenance, inspection and repair services.
- Performs turf maintenance duties associated with maintenance of parks and ball fields.
- Cleans and performs minor maintenance repairs on park properties.
- Completes records and reports.
- Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD
- Performs other related duties as required.

Key Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- Knowledge of building maintenance, building cleaning, and building trades, including Health Department regulations governing the operation of public pools and rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work, including the safe handling of chemicals, corrosive materials and pressurized gases.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision in carrying out semiskilled mechanical, building maintenance and cleaning tasks.
- Skill in the operation of equipment associated with the employee specialized areas of employment.
- Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, Workers’ Compensation Act and OHS Regulations and other relevant safety statutes.
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform the required duties.
Qualifications
- High School Graduation
- A minimum of 2 years' directly related experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
Certifications
- Acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent is required to undergo a criminal record check to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment.
- Refrigeration Operator Certificate or 5th Class Power Engineer Refrigeration
- Pool Operator Certificate Level 1
- Pool Operator Certificate Level 2
- Building Service Worker 1 Certificate
- Building Service Worker 2 Certificate
- WHMIS Certification
- Valid BC Driver's Licence
