Rate of Pay: $37.90 plus 14% in lieu of benefits

Hours of Work: 20 hours per week.  Candidate will be required to work on Sundays. Preference to also work on Mondays and Wednesdays, with some flexibility. Additional hours may be available based on operational needs. 

Term Length:  10 months or return of incumbent

Summary

This position assists in the delivery of aquatic and instruction services, including planning, program organization, and promotion aquatic programs. The Aquatic Programmer is knowledgeable of and able to implement the facility, aquatic rules and regulations while maintaining a positive relationship with staff and the public.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and directs a wide variety of aquatic programs.
  • Assists in the design of promotional materials such as brochures, flyers, and advertisements.
  • In conjunction with the Aquatic Coordinator, reviews recommended training items and assists with the development of staff training initiatives and agendas.
  • Leads and implements in-service training in consultation with Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Provides regular work direction and guidance to staff and provides follow-up and clarification.
  • Works with the Aquatic Coordinator to determine staffing needs.
  • Hires, orients and trains new staff.
  • Assists in the evaluation of instructors and provides regular feedback while also ensuring Lifesaving Society standards are maintained.
  • Ensures facility policies and procedures are adhered to and assists with maintaining a current Pool Safety Plan.
  • Assists with coordinating lesson sets, including assigning and coordinating instructors and pool space plans.
  • Assists with the smooth operation of aquatic programs.
  • Acts as a liaison between parents and instructors, dealing with situations/concerns, as required.
  • Prepares staff schedules to ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Prepares and reviews payroll forms.
  • Combines/cancels classes depending on registration, assigns instructors, inputs instructor pay, develops program sheets, inputs courses into Xplor Recreation and registers participants.
  • Coordinates other Xplor Recreation administrative functions.
  • Assists and coordinates private lesson programs including dates, instructors and file contracts.
  • Works in collaboration with recreation rrogram team and provides guidance and direction to all program staff as required.
  • Provides direction and support in other program areas as required.
  • In collaboration with the Aquatic Coordinator, plans and coordinates special events.
  • Lifeguards and instructs other programs as needed.
  • Provides direction, guidance and assistance to specialty programs and community groups. May be required to assist with aquatic related maintenance duties.
  • Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Key Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
  • Knowledge of recreation programming coupled with the fundamentals of leadership
  • Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, Workers’ Compensation Act and OHS Regulations and other relevant safety statutes.
  • Ability to develop harmonious relationships with the general public and staff.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate activities and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and provide work direction and supervision to auxiliary program staff.
  • Knowledge and ability to use various computer word processing and recreation based software.
  • Knowledge of aquatic safety practices and relevant legislation including Lifesaving Society guidelines and BC Health Act regulations.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a related discipline
  • A minimum of 2 years' directly related experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

Certifications

  • Acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent is required to undergo a criminal record check to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment.
  • National Lifeguard Certificate
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • One or more advanced aquatic certifications
  • Lifesaving Swim Instructor
