Summary
This position is responsible for the daily operations of the CRD Animal Shelter. The position works independently and is responsible for establishing and maintaining a healthy environment for impounded animals as well as working positively with the public on issues related to the shelter.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Liaises with the public to promote shelter services and maintains positive public relations.
- Ensures CRD Animal Shelter safety and security policies and provisions are in place and are adhered to.
- Makes recommendations on safety and security policies and provisions.
- Maintains healthy environment for impounded animals.
- Prepares animal food and water bowls for distribution.
- Monitors the physical and behavioural condition of animals in the shelter.
- Examines each impounded animal daily to determine if it is in good health.
- Ensures unhealthy animals receive veterinary care and administers recommended medications.
- Documents equipment, services and building defects arranging for repairs.
- Maintains entrance, paths, car park, driveway, etc. in a condition that ensures public safety.
- Maintains all facilities in a clean and tidy condition
- Supervises Kennel Assistant.
- Supervises shelter volunteers.
- Operates an animal adoption program.
- Ensures that all impounded animals have identifying documentation completed, etc.
- Collects the proper impoundment, board, licence, etc. fees from animal owners in accordance with the applicable municipal animal control bylaw.
- Maintains accountability and security of collected funds.
- Submits appropriate documentation to supervisory staff / bylaw staff as required.
- Maintains a lost and found system for domestic animals.
- Discusses and suggests appropriate solutions to animal behavioural problems with the Chief Bylaw Officer.
- Markets the CRD Animal Adoption Program by promoting adoptable animals on the CRD website and through social media.
- Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Key Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Substantial passion for the health and well-being of animals.
- Thorough knowledge of concepts of kennel cleanliness and prevention of disease.
- Thorough knowledge of basic animal first aid (preferably through course work) and ability to assess the health of animals.
- Thorough knowledge and experience dealing with animal behavioural problems.
- Considerable experience training dogs and other animals.
- Considerable experience with handling aggressive or distressed animals including vicious dogs.
- Strong ability to coach, lead, mentor and supervise others in the work unit.
- Strong ability to effectively guide the work activities of volunteers, when required.
- Strong ability to maintain clear records, documentation and log books.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply animal control bylaws and other legislation.
- Strong MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and SharePoint skills.
- Strong proficiency and experience with licensing programs such as ACS Licensing.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work under pressure, prioritize work and to set and meet deadlines.
- Considerable experience with cash handling.
- Strong ability to handle, and experience with handling, potentially confrontational encounters with the public.
Qualifications
- High School Graduation
- Courses in a related discipline
- A minimum of 2 years' directly related experience
Certifications
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification
- Valid BC Driver's Licence
- Acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent is required to undergo a criminal record check to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment.
